You may think that choosing the music that you listen to while you workout is as simple as choosing what you like. However, it’s a little more complicated than that. For your next workout, you may want to pay close attention to the beat and tempo of the music as well as your mood and nutrition for the day.
If you are interested in building distance, you may need to stick with a slightly slower than normal tempo. You want your breathing to remain steady while you push your body and your mind further – you will need to slightly slow your running in order to do this. To push yourself through the next mile, try picking music that would support a run time of 1 minute less than your normal pace.
If you are interested in running faster and increasing speed, you need to amplify the tempo. That’s right – speed up your music, speed you up! Hopefully, you start with a distance that is very comfortable to you so that your breathing and actual work (running) done by your body increases. Pick a tempo for your music that supports a run time of 30 seconds faster than your normal pace for increasing speed.
Your mood, as well as how well you have nourished your body for the day may determine your proper training tempo as well. Feeling blue? You may need an extra push with a faster tempo! Hydrated and ate like a rockstar? Push that tempo up and watch yourself run farther and faster than ever before. Feeling like you might be on the verge of being under the weather? Dial that tempo back and take it easy.
Whatever music you choose, make sure it’s music you enjoy!
